Goodreads asked Lawrence Wright:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Lawrence Wright I can only reference my own experience. I had to make a living, so I became a journalist. Nobody was going to pay me to write a novel or god forbid a poem. But the experience of being a journalist taught me how to research and allowed me into other minds I would never have the opportunity to do otherwise. I think even a little experience of reporting, going out in the world, finding out how others think, is invaluable for any writer.
