Michael asked Lawrence Wright:

What were some of the challenges of switching to writing fiction? And what were some of the freedoms?

Lawrence Wright For one thing, you can't interview your character and ask what they eat for breakfast. You have to do the imagining. But that's fun. Some characters really do speak for themselves. I think any writer will admit that inspiration is a mystery, but it's also a joy when a character you "created" breaks loose and becomes a singular individual.
