H James asked Andrew Rowe:

Is there any connection in name between Yui Shaw of How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps and Yuxia of Neal Stephenson's Reamde ? I note the overlap general personality, phonetic similarity of name, and, of course, RPG setting.

Andrew Rowe "Yui Shaw" is a western rendering of the word "Yuusha", which is Japanese for "brave one" or "hero". It's the title that is generally ascribed to legendary JRPG heroes, most notably in the Dragon Quest franchise, which was one of the main inspirations for my story (and one of the main things parodied by it). Naming the protagonist "Yuusha" or some variant of it is something that also references Japanese works - "Yuusha" is the name of one of the two protagonists in Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, and the protagonist of Endro is named similarly.

I haven't read Reamde, so I can't comment on if Stephenson may have had similar naming motivation.
