The Middle East gives the appearance of never changing, and alliances are always changing. Right now the only country besides Tunisia that seems to be really making a move toward democracy is Iraq--this, despite all the bloodshed and ethnic rivalries. It's messy but it is something like democracy. I don't have much hope for other Arab countries where tyranny has become even more entrenched.

Hi Mr. Lawrence, thanks for the Looming Tower, it's a great read. You note that Jamal Khashoggi, the journalist murdered in Turkey by the Saudis, was a confidant of UBL. Why do you think Khashoggi was murdered? What are you thoughts as to why this connection was never, to my knowledge, acknowledged in the US press coverage of that event. I think the press saw it as an opportunity to smear Trump, nothing more.

I enjoyed "Going Clear" as an excellent exploration of the dark side of human nature through the prism of a cult religion. I understand that a fiction pandemic thriller is a very different writing effort, but did your nonfiction career inform your new writing effort, either regarding human nature, the role of research in establishing realism, or some other way?
