A Goodreads user asked Chris Grabenstein:

I was just wondering how you round out your characters. Mine always seem flatter than the paper they are one. Any tips?

Chris Grabenstein Very good question. Never take your readers where they want to go right away. Leave them hanging at the end of every chapter. And, as Robert McKee notes in his great book on writing STORY, if a scene starts positive, it should end negative. If it starts negative, it should end positive. So think of your chapters as scenes.
