With any books it's a good idea to read the synopsis and see if the story idea appeals to you. You can look at books according to the genre to start with. Then, narrow it down to your choice of trope (type of storyline).
You might even ask yourself how much time you have to dedicate to reading (hopefully a lot!) to see if you want to start with a novella, anthology or short story.
I love anthologies to help discover new authors. You may want to give that a try as well!
