Lois McMaster Bujold:
After reading Masquerade in Lodi, I am now rereading all the Penric books, as there were references in the new one that didn't quite ring a bell. And just this morning, a memory popped up. There is a real town called Lodi, in the central valley of California. Were you aware of it? Credence Clearwater even wrote a song about it, with the chorus: Oh Lord, I'm Stuck in Lodi Again. Oh, and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

There are dozens of real-world places named Lodi, mostly I suspect after the original one in Italy. I'd selected the city name somewhat idly back when it was just a throw-away line in an earlier Penric story, with no expectation of its ever becoming a live setting, because it sounded suitably Italianate, implying but without obviously being Venice. And so I was stuck with it. (Same goes for the planet Jackson's Whole, btw. No, it never had a hidden meaning, it was just a bit of word-play.)
Glad you enjoyed the story! The filched canal-city setting-inspiration was a lot of fun, once I got down to it, and suggested all kinds of useful plot developments.
(And, yep, I also remember the old CCR song.)

Lois McMaster Bujold:
In nearly all your books, you use only a single Point of View character, and generally I really love your close third person style. Recently, though, I was rereading The Warrior's Apprentice, and it occurred to me that Elena has a huge personal story that we don't get to see much of. Did you ever consider using a dual POV for this book, or otherwise consider letting us see the world through Elena's eyes?

This is extremely random and detailed, but I always wanted to know what happened to Kostolitz?
