I just read The Island of Sea Women. I was fascinated to read about a place and a culture I had never heard of. Your research was clearly meticulous. This book will stay with me for a long time as there was such impactful and troubling history, and the story of the women...please remind me how you got the idea to write about the island's culture?

I first discovered the haenyeo about ten years ago when I was sitting in a doctor's office, flipping through magazines, waiting to be called in for my appointment. I came across one small photo and one small paragraph about the diving women. I knew in that moment that I wanted to write about them one day.
