Hi Karen! Nice to see you on here after our interactions on Twitter! I'm so sorry for the delay in answering your question; I've only just seen it! As you may now have read in the book itself, I discovered the girls' story through directing a play about them. I discovered the play by searching online for 'great plays for women' and was lucky enough that These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich was a script that came up on that internet search. The whole experience has felt serendipitous from start to finish and it's been the greatest honour of my life to help these incredible women have a voice.

No question, Kate. Just praise. This was such an insightful book. I didn't know what women faced in those times, and who, frankly, still face many of the same challenges. Congress has still yet to pass the ERA! In any case, thank you so much for letting us into the life of Elizabeth Packard. By the way, isn't Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written?

Hi Kate! How do you organize all your research to write in story format? I am absolutely ASTOUNDED at your books. Truly masterpieces! I just finished The Woman They Could Not Silence and I am in total awe. Having actual quotes from each person and then putting it into a story that is enjoyable has to be quite the feat!
