Goodreads asked Jamie Applegate Hunter:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jamie Applegate Hunter The idea for August Rain came when I was listening to Taylor Swift's album folklore. There was the trilogy of songs august, betty, and cardigan. I always wondered...why was James with August the entire summer, and what happened to her at then end? She was mentioned in one song and then never again. I began to formulate my own course of events, and I went to Heather and told her the story. I said, "I really want to write this." I started throwing plot lines at her, and she was like..."What if we did this?" and thus our brainstorming began.

Surprisingly, the original ending I had is not how current the book ends. Heather didn't like the ending and threw out another option, which gave me the idea for the epilogue.

I wrote the epilogue and sent it to her and she was like, YES. Ironically enough, the epilogue was written before the majority of the book and we went from there.
