In my family history, one of my German relatives was among three spies delivered to Long Island by U-boat during WW1. Their objective was to blow up the Hell's Gate Bridge in New York City. They were captured because they declined to kill someone who saw them landing on the beach. The witness reported their arrival, and they were captured soon after.
