Yes! After I read Raina Telgemeier's amazing SMILE, I started thinking, maybe THIS format is the right one to tell my own personal story, when I am ready. (Raina is THE BEST. Such a huge support and an all-around amazing person and I haven't even gotten into what an amazing author and artist she is.)
Also, I read Scott McCloud's UNDERSTANDING COMICS three times before I even got started on drawing El Deafo. That book (and his others) is the best thing out there for folks trying this format. Even if you're not drawing it, I think it is the perfect book to get you started.
