Joseph Finder
Joseph Finder asked Douglas Preston:

In the Pendergast books, but especially in the Wyman Ford novels (most recently THE KRAKEN PROJECT) there’s always the possibility of supernatural forces in play. Do you set yourself rules about how to do that, or how much of it to do, lest the books cross into a different genre?

Douglas Preston This is always a tricky problem. Almost all that appears supernatural or far out science fiction in our novels becomes, in the end, rational and explicable. We do tease readers with supernatural forces but we always--or almost always--explain them in the end. While the AI creation in Kraken, Dorothy, may see wildly improbable to some, it is actually based closely on solid advances in AI, coding, and something known as the Church-Turing thesis, one of the foundations of computational theory. There is nothing improbably about my AI creation: someday soon it will be a reality.
