Aljaž asked Andy Weir:

How long did it take to write The Martian and also is there anything you would change if you would be writing it again? Thanks.

Andy Weir It took three years to write. If I had it to do over again, I would probably do the second dust storm differently. First off, there'd already been a dust storm. Second off, I feel like the part where he leaves sensors out and goes back to collect them ran kind of long and wasn't as interesting as it could be.

Also, I'd probably change the initial sandstorm to an engine test failure or something. Just so I stop getting nerd-rage emails about how Martian sandstorms don't have enough momentum to do that kind of damage. I'm getting sick of having to explain over and over "Yes, I know. I made a concession to reality for dramatic purposes".
