I understand that you originally published The Martian serially on your blog, which was useful for getting feedback and refining the story and the math. Do you think that's something more fiction writers should employ? Or is it unique to The Martian in some way?

I called them "beta readers" and they were *incredibly* useful. It was something of a special case, because I wanted scientific accuracy. So having those readers to point out errors was critical.
For a normal story it would be useful, yes. You find out what plotlines they like and which ones they don't. It gives you a feel for what's working and what isn't.

Hi! I loved your book so much! At first I borrowed it from my friend but then went out to buy it myself! I want to be an astronaut someday and there were a lot of science terminology in the book. How did you know so much? Was some of that loose science too? Thanks for writing the book! Allison
