Otis Chandler asked Andy Weir:

I understand that you originally published The Martian serially on your blog, which was useful for getting feedback and refining the story and the math. Do you think that's something more fiction writers should employ? Or is it unique to The Martian in some way?

Andy Weir I called them "beta readers" and they were *incredibly* useful. It was something of a special case, because I wanted scientific accuracy. So having those readers to point out errors was critical.

For a normal story it would be useful, yes. You find out what plotlines they like and which ones they don't. It gives you a feel for what's working and what isn't.
