Have you read any speculative missions for colonization in the upper atmosphere of Venus? The vision of a Bespin-like floating colony with travel by dirigible seems to be a perfect blend of hard science with fanboy Star Wars and steampunk nostalgia. The Martian was a perfect blend of humor, thriller and science. Thank you for a novel depicting smart people making smart choices where science is the hero.

I haven't seen anything about colonizing Mars's atmosphere. I don't see that as plausible, though. The atmosphere is very thin so it would be extremely difficult to make a floating colony there (it would be a hell of a lot easier to do it on Earth). And the obvious question would be: why go to all that trouble when you could much more easily be on the ground?

I read The Martian last spring and LOVED it. I also saw it as an engaging read for my hard to reach seniors. I am a public school English teacher in Virginia. I want multiple copies for my classroom library. Will you give me some? :-) It never hurts to ask. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
