Azu asked Josh Lanyon:

Dear Josh. Thank you for yesterday. I was surprised that Ethan was more aggressive in his approach to Sam. I can't imagine that from Sam who is popular even within the FBI now. On the other hand, what kind of love did Jason have after he was dropped by Bucksner? He was a water polo player, right?

Josh Lanyon Hi Azu. No, I don't think Ethan was more aggressive in the relationship. I think Ethan would have been the type of insecure young person who sometimes does foolish things in order to get the other person's attention or get them to prove they really care. It wouldn't be deliberate manipulation, but it would feel like deliberate manipulation to someone like Sam. Especially when Sam was younger and not as quite as shrewd about people.

Jason and Boyd Boxner never had an actual relationship. Jason had a teen crush on Boxner which Boxner sensed and rejected.

Once Jason found his feet as a sexually active adult, he would have been a little bit of a heartbreaker. Meaning he was interested and available, but never really emotionally engaged. Which is why he struggles with Sam. Sam, at least, had a long term romantic relationship, even if it was a bit dysfunctional. Jason really didn't. Jason had a series of romantic flings which he enjoyed in the moment and then promptly forgot about.
