Goodreads asked E.L. Lyons:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

E.L. Lyons Find beta readers--and don't just send them all the whole manuscript at once. This is asking a lot of people to do the same work for free. Often the advice received in the first chapter of your first presentable draft (no, not your actual first draft) can be applied to the rest of your MS. Send the first couple chapters to a couple people. Apply edits, send it back with a few more chapters. This allows you and your BRs to work with bite-sized chunks while also creating a rapport and trust. Send it to a new wave of readers after that, and see if they run into the same issues or if you've managed to resolve them.
