How do you bring your characters to life. Do you have a special formula for that?

I'm sorry I'm just answering this. I always forget! A lot of times my characters come to me in dreams fully realized. Especially, when on that verge of sleep. I try to remember what I dreamt and how it looks on paper (or computer). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
