I have trouble envisioning what you frequently refer to as the "high orbitals". Would this be the Hill sphere? if so, that seems like a large area (or volume) to control and I wonder how the effective missel range might be related. If the Hill sphere is outside the "high orbitals" just where are those orbitals? Also, if a moon is also involved, how does that affect high orbitals? Good stories, missing a key concept.

It's military slang for having control of the orbital space surrounding the planet, allowing you to drop rocks/insert troops anywhere you like without interference. The ultimate high ground, if you will.

In one of the latter Ark Royal books, a character remarks that the UK alone has 200 colonist-carriers, each one carrying a hundred thousand people. Somewhere else, I read fifty thousand people. Regardless, even if a colony transport mission can take several years, that is a lot of people to haul. How many inhabitants does the UK have to afford sending off 10-20 mln every few years? PS When will we get Heirs of Cat. 4?
