Goodreads asked Brent Hartinger:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Brent Hartinger Without question, it's the nice things readers tell me -- that something I wrote touched them in some way. It's especially nice when it's something I haven't really heard before, some new nuance to a book or story (which still happens a lot). Comments like that are far better than awards, or money, or even the satisfaction of the process itself (when it's going well). In fact, reader feedback is so good that even makes up for all the bad things about writing -- rejection, bad reviews, disappointing sales, or whatever.
