How do you build up the emotions in your stories? Do you write a story imagining yourself in it as amain character?

Frances Mayes Telling events honestly, with the best writing you can muster, and having a sting impetus to tell the story should take care of building emotion. I've only written one novel, and I was not the main character, but when I write memoir, it is my own experience so, yes, I guess I do see myself as the source of the story.
