I've been a fan of your "Under the Tuscan Sun" and I really enjoyed the movie based on your Story. I just learned you lived in Italy, and found some good things there. I haven't read your new book yet, so it's going on my "must read" list and look forward to reading it. A well written book can be a trip, a lover, a location, a family member, a memory and so much more. What is your objective when you write a book?

Bottom line---to convey the actual, felt experience of a particular moment, or period, in time. To make the writing convey to the reader the immediate sensations and feelings of the incident described.

In Under Magnolia, (and all your work, really...) the rich sound details ~~ "I imagine fleas and snoring and sweat and couplings.." weave through the narrative as well as the beautiful scents of memory, "an outbreak of quartz, a clutch of blue bachelor's buttons" and I wonder what path in the present enticed you to begin the walk back to Fitzgerald?
