Meryl van der Merwe
Meryl van der Merwe asked Anne M. Chappel:

I am currently in Zanzibar. We visited the old slave market a few hours before I read that section in your book. We walked through without a guide so didn't hear the stories but did see the 2 underground rooms that a plaque said had been used for holding slaves. I tried searching for info online and everything I found re-iterated that but in the book, you suggested that isn't true. Could you share your source, please?

Anne M. Chappel It suits the tourist market to promote this, but the dungeons were built after the slave market was closed. Prof. Abdul Sheriff, the eminent Zanzibari historian has written about this and that is partly where my information comes from. Also Prof Glassman. I lived in Zanzibar as a child and the dungeons were never known for holding slaves. Money is made
by guides telling stories.
