I’m enjoying the book but I noticed on page 147 Donkey Kong ia described as a ‘little Japanese Italian plumber’ - but that’s Mario, not Donkey Kong. I’m wondering if that was on purpose to make us pause or if you never played Donkey Kong and hence why the confusion? :)
Gabrielle Zevin
Of course I've played Donkey Kong! If you read the passage again, you will find that I'm not describing Donkey Kong here, but the hero of the game, Donkey Kong, who is Mario. While the titular character and villain of Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong, the player character (i.e. the character that the gamer inhabits) and hero of Donkey Kong is Mario (in what I believe is his first appearance). Donkey Kong just stands at the top of the building, hurling barrels like a maniac. :) If that description has a point of interest, it's perhaps that I describe him as "Japanese Italian."

Hi Gabrielle, thank you so much for writing Young Jane Young. I LOVED it. Having said that, I am curious why Aviva doesn't confront Jorge about the baby or (and) reveal who the father is to her daughter. If it were the Congressman, I wouldnt have been surprised by her reticence. What's the rationale for this scenario?

I'm sitting here trying to figure out if I should put your newest book as a fulfilment of the ace spectrum in the PopSugar challenge. Sam gave me some serious ace vibes--am I just totally off on this? If so, I think it's quite brilliant and makes so much sense. So many of us in the gamer world identify like this!

Hi Gabrielle! I'm a really big fan of your work and love your writing! I have always been curious the abbreviation Win says to Anya at the end of In the Age of Blood and Chocolate: "ddt ylrpang is imy ihtymyo ikidharbidwaethy itimsly idhmr"? Can you tell us what it stands for! Thanks!
