I was driving home from a science-fiction convention and looking at the rumble strip as I drove. I thought about the noise it made and wondered what would happen if someone used that noise to send a message. Many of my stories are like that - creative ideas that spring into my head while I'm meditating on life in general :).

For your influences you mention Tolkien, Herbert and Austen, great writers all. My question is this, the differences between them are largely apparent but what do you see as the similarities that make them collectively your influences? As a reader I like them all and can say it is simply because they all tell wonderful stories within very fleshed out worlds, but what does a writer see as a connecting thread?
