A Goodreads user asked Stuart Gibbs:

Why did you include a same-sex relationship in your book? Even from a financial stand-point, its a bad idea considering that all of the negative reviews about your book Spy School Goes North are because you made a character gay.

Stuart Gibbs Do you honestly think this was a financial decision? It was a MORAL decision. HUNDREDS of readers had written to me, asking for me to include a character like them in my books, because they didn't feel represented. So since I had included several hetero crushes, it seemed only right to show the world as it actually is and include a gay one. I knew that there would be backlash, but I do not regret my decision. Because for every person like you who expresses dismay or hate, a dozen readers write to me thanking me for what I have done.
