It's been very disheartening in recent times that people associated with noble cause organizations, like Greg Mortensen and Somaly Mam (and I realize there's a huge difference there in how funds raised were actually used) have turned out to be not quite who they seemed. What would you like to tell readers and donors about continuing to trust organizations to do the right thing and trying to aid change?
Nicholas D. Kristof
It is disheartening. And I sometimes see something else that is troubling: Great people who start organizations but then aren't great at managing them or efficient at investing money. I guess I would say that some of this is a part of being human. Some politicians or sports heroes likewise disappoint us, and some investments that look fabulous end up going bankrupt. Likewise, some heroes fall short in one way or another. We can do homework and try to reduce the risk of deception, but at the end of the day it's impossible to eliminate it entirely! But because there are some disappointments in any field, don't despair of everyone in it.

I've started reading A Path Appears-and while I haven't finished it yet- I think the comparison of non-profit employee pay to for-profit is an excellent point. I agree that better employee benefits would attract talented professionals for the longer term and operating similar to a for-profit may lead to greater success. What steps do you think need to be taken to change the perception of how funds should be allocated?

I really enjoyed the PBS documentary based on "Half the Sky," and I read that there is another film coming out for "A Path Appears." I think the documentaries' involvement of celebrity activists is an interesting touch. How are these celebrity activists chosen? More generally, how much influence do you have over the documentary?
