Alia G asked Lisa See:

Hi Lisa See!! My question has to do with a slightly older book :) I loved Shanghai Girls recently, more specifically, the dynamic between May and Pearl! My question is...how did you decide to have Z.G be the father of May's child? Was it to create tension between the sisters or was there another reason? Thank you and have a great day!! Alia🩵

Lisa See Most definitely to create tension. Pearl thinks she's in love with Z.G., but he and May are the ones with the relationship. That would be hard in any circumstance, but particularly hard if you were sisters. Have you read the sequel -- Dreams of Joy?
