It's so funny you asked, because I was just at my annual reader & author event, and we all talked about this a lot. The industry has changed so much, so I have no real idea what the process is now for new authors.
The only "from the heart" advice I can give is to write for yourself first, not what you think is trendy or saleable or easy. You have to love the book, otherwise writing is pure misery and not worth the BIG effort to build a readership.
