It was the year a million people lined the streets of New York to welcome her, but Lord Altrincham questioned whether she was losing touch with her people at home. The novelist Daphne du Maurier helped with her Christmas message that year, and Prince Charles went away to school. She was a 31 year-old woman finding her place in the world and we know how that feels. How could I not write about it?
