I have a friend who loves the Vorkosigan Saga, and persuaded me to start it, and I've also fallen in love with it. She's got a birthday in September, and I would love to get her a personalized signed copy of a her favorite book in the series. Do you do anything like that? I would be happy to send you the book with postage paid for the return journey. If this is possible, I can be contacted at josh.charles@gmail.com

As a general answer to a specific question, no, I don't attempt to handle books sent by readers through the mail anymore. (So many problems and hassles, including lost-in-the-mail hazards, etc.) However, anyone who wants to purchase a signed, personalized copy of any of my books in print can order them from Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore here in Minneapolis, and they will be shipped from the store.

Great folks at Hugo's, an indie bookstore well worth supporting. They'll be glad to help you out.

Hello, I have a writing question about finding that balance between writing for yourself (e.g., the story you yourself would like to read); and considering or taking feedback about "what the public would want." Is there a creative vs. commercial dilemma? Or is it really more that THIS is the story that feels right, maybe people will like it, but if not, oh well. Just curious about how, or if, you balance these? TY

Do you ever find yourself smirking or chuckling as one of your characters does or says something particularly clever during your writing process? It seems to me that in your place, I'd be hard put not to, but that's colored of course by the end product, not the process.
