Wot5G deals with the difference between a Great Soul and what is deemed a Great Person (power, wealth, military victories, etc.) Sometimes a god does favor a soldier. How do the other gods feel about & react to a god’s favorite going around harvesting before their time the souls they are trying to cultivate? Do they understand wars as other than an odd increase in souls? Can the gods even communicate with each other?

I can only definitively answer the last of these -- yes, the gods can communicate with each other. Doubtless in ways and depths humans can barely understand.
Technically, what regulates the number of deaths the gods receive is the number of births. Strict 1:1 ratio, at all times and in all places. Nothing ever changes that.

Your 5 Gods books contain one of my favorite story universes. I've been tempted to read your other books. I love your character development! I haven't read them yet because I'm nervous about becoming obsessed over another series and the feeling of knowing my mind will never find peace until I devour every single book. It's a nerd specific question but I admit to being an obsessed fan: what happens to the liveried butter bugs? Do they manage to catch the queen before she burrows into Vorkosigan House, or is Vorbarr Sultana overrun with them. And if so can Miles ( and his Armsman) laugh about it?
