Whut
Whut asked Lois McMaster Bujold:

Do you love all your stories intensely once you finish them? What happens if you get to the end of one and you just like it, or think it's merely adequate? Withhold it? Publish anyway? Did that ever even happen? Was the public reception different than you expected?

Lois McMaster Bujold
I have a hot-cold, not quite love-hate, relationship with all my stories in the course of writing them, depending mainly on whether things are going smoothly or I'm stuck, sometimes for weeks. Now that I'm semi-retired and writing without contracts and deadlines, the latter is much less stressful.

If I like it enough to finish, I like it enough to publish.

Public reception is always wildly varied -- you can check out my one- and five-star reviews for the same stories right here on Goodreads. So there really isn't any "not expected". I just hope my tales will find their audiences, and sell well-enough, as they have so far.
