A Goodreads user asked David Kersten:

What was your inspiration for The Freezer?

David Kersten Primarily my inspiration was wanting to write a book. Late one night, sometime in 2008, I laid in bed and asked myself, if I were to write a book, what kind of book would it be? My answer: post-apocalyptic fiction. What kind of story would it be? My answer: the least likely guy in the world saves humanity. What would be the setting? My answer: somewhere in Montana. And finally, the plot? My answer: a combination of everything I loved about reading. I wanted the hero every guy wants to be, the craziest situation imaginable (but one that is still plausible), a reason the hero could save humanity, a few philosophical conundrums, and a sprinkle of sex. Seven hours later, I rolled over and closed my eyes, wanting a little sleep before getting up for work in a couple hours. The story, at least the first half of it, was already written in my head. A few months later, (on Jan 1, 2009) I resolved to put what was in my head on paper and see where it went.
