Write the book you most want to read.
Don’t worry about what’s hot or current and don’t worry about people thinking your idea isn’t cool enough. If you really want to write about sparkly vampires or magical elves, do it. Figure out why you love those characters and bring that into your writing.
I wrote Traitor’s Blade because I love characters like Falcio, Kest, and Brasti. I didn’t worry about what I’d put on a query letter or whether people would tell me that swashbuckling swordsmen were out of fashion. I just wrote the book I most wanted to read. It turns out that if you do that there’s a good chance other people will want to read it too.

Sebastien de Castell:
Hey - I really love your spellslinger series. Actually it's my current favourite book series and I reread the four books already within 2018. I am also super excited for the upcoming ones! Now I was wondering - do you know tabletop role-playing games (or pen-and-paper role-playing games) ? I feel like the entire spellslinger world would fit perfectly for this and would make great adventures!

Of the characters in your books, who is you favorite to write dialogue for? Brasti seems to have the best "one liners" but some of the flourishes you add to Falcio's descriptions are pure hilarity. Thanks for making a fun and exciting series. Nice to see an adventure series with a sense of fun to balance out the darkness.

Mr. de Castell, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the first novel in the Greatcoats series, fantastic! I'm waiting on the second to get to me and when it does I'm sure I'll devour it as well. Finished the first in less than 24hrs. I would recommend Micheal J. Sullivan's books if you haven't read them. Thanks again for the excellent stories. Matthew McMillan P.S. Appears I need a ?? mark, it's here.
