I see you referred to your writing as "so-called narrative history." I think there are literary fiction elements to your stories, as well. Do you think your writing bridges both genres? What are your thoughts on the whole genre labeling of books? And what exactly is narrative historical fiction as opposed to historical fiction?
Erik Larson
There's nothing fictional about my work. I simply apply the tactics and techniques of fiction to the writing of nonfiction, eg., foreshadowing, withholding, and such.

I am really looking forward to reading your new book. The Lusitania has always fascinated me, though not as much as Titanic. One of my favorite books ever is The Devil in the White City. Did you spend time Chicago visiting the sites and locations when you did research, and where did you find all the minute details about the creation of the White City and the series of murders that transpired during the fair?

I was privileged to attend one of your tour dates for "Devil in the White City" (a personal favorite) and found you eloquent, engaging and pretty darn funny. My question is: Do you enjoy speaking publicly and the physical interaction with fans? Not all writers are great speakers and much preparation goes into speaking to, as well as entertaining, a live audience. P.S. You rock!
