Kurt asked Erik Larson:

Who influenced your approach to non-fiction story telling? Two of my favorite non-fiction books are In Cold Blood & The Executioners Song which both were very effective.

Erik Larson The biggest and most direct influence was David McCullough's "The Johnstown Flood." As I was contemplating my first work of narrative nonfiction, I outlined McCullough's book to see how he maintained narrative drive while also working in crucial background. I loved "In Cold Blood," and Hersey's "Hiroshima," and Barbara Tuchman's "Guns of August."
