I seem to get a great deal of satisfaction from reading your books, asking you the occasional question etc. I wonder if this may obscure learning from the content of your books etc. Can you comment on how to keep satisfaction at a moderate (constructive) level?

Answer: I have found that when one is entertained or touched in a way that enthuses the senses, a message -- or thing of value -- may be passed on. The delicious exterior flesh of a peach is tantalising to the tastebuds, but is of little other value than to encourage us to farm these fruits, and ensure they are planted in great quantity.

I've just being reading Wilfred Thesiger's account of his journey among the Danakil/Afar, and it reminded me of your travels with them in "In Search of King Solomon's Mines."...... What was the most important thing you learnt in your Ethiopian journeys, and what helped you to learn it?
