How long does it take to build the kind of connection that you have with your characters? You say they're very real to you. Does that happen immediately? Does it depend on how good a writer you are?

Honestly it depends on the characters. Some characters pop into my head completely formed and I can't. stop. thinking about them. Others are more shy and take time for me to get to know them. But I can never write a scene with a character until I care about them and feel like I know all their wants and needs and secrets.
