Oh boy, now THERE'S a question with a super long, super complicated answer--and even if I went into all kinds of detail it would still only cover part of the answer because every book travels a different road toward publication.
So I'll just say this: for one thing, I don't publish my books. I sell them to a publisher who does that for me. As for how I sold it to that publisher? I had a literary agent. And I got that literary agent through a process called querying (google "querying literary agents" for more info on that). Before any of that happened though, I had to write the book and revise it and revise it more and more. Being an author is a lot of work. Fortunately I love it, so I don't mind. :)

In Keeper of the Lost Cities, was it hard to make Sophie understand that she's an elf? Because I love writing, and I'm writing a story similar to that at home for fun (Person finds out they have magical powers and goes to school for people who also do), and I'm having trouble making the person understand while still showing that this is obviously hard for them to believe. Have any tips?
