Why is Claire different in appearance from the books vs the tv show?

Diana Gabaldon Well, let's just think about that for a moment... Just how do you expect a casting director to take a written description and find a) an actress who looks exactly like that description, AND b) can act the part creditably? (Don't have room here for the whole rant about What Actors Do , but the short form is--they _act_. Physical appearance is actually not all that relevant in most cases.)
