Lisa that quote u wrote about sisters as u know also have a unique relationship. This is the person who knows u your entire life, who should love u and stand by u no matter what and yet it's your sister who knows exactly where to drive the knife to hurt you the most. I have a baby sister exactly like that. For over a year I have been trying to get her to love me as a sister and friend like we were last year. nothing?

Donna,
I just turned in my next novel and have been catching up on Goodreads messages. I so wish I'd seen this 35 days ago when you wrote it. I hope things are better with your sister now. In case they aren't...
I'm one of four sisters. I have a half-sister that's my mother's daughter, a half-sister that's my father's daughter, and a former step-sister that I've now know for 56 years. I think we all go through periods where we're close and when we aren't; when we love each other and when we hate each other. When I was working on Shanghai Girls, I interviewed a woman who hadn't spoken to her sister in 40 years! I said, "You must not feel like she's your sister anymore." She answered, "Of I do, because sisters are for life." I believe that. I'm really hoping that what you and your sister are going through is just a tiny blip in what will be a lifelong relationship.

Have you seen the documentary "Above the Drowning Sea" about the Jews who fled Vienna in 1939 for Shanghai? It's the story, told both through the eyes of some of the survivors and with film clips from those days. The Chinese Counsel issued 30,000+ exit visas so that Jews could leave Vienna. Never mind that they didn't have any place to go, this was the only way they could escape. It's a wonderful film. Julie Martin
