Are any of the characters in the Passage triology based on people you know in real life?

This answer may seem a little glib, but all the characters are based on everybody—that is, the sum total of my experience of other people (and myself) is where the characters come from. But I also borrow friends' names all the time. A pal of mine asked me if he could be in the third book, and right about then I was about to make a new character, a member of Michael’s crew who are fixing the Bergensfjord. My friend is a tall, handsome guy, a former professional athlete turned coach. He also happens to have a great Polish last name and a patch of white hair in his otherwise black beard. I said, “Sure, as long as you don’t mind being tiny and dying in the end," and thus was born Patch Szumanski.

In an interview with the Daily beast Mr. Noah Charney asked you how The Passage and The Twelve come about? you said "I wondered if my style would change, given the content, but I found out, to my relief, that you just write how you write." Can you elaborate on that? As an author, do you decide upon a style or is it something intrinsic that you discover?

To what extent do you think horror trends reflect the social anxieties of their time? i.e Frankenstien as a representation of the 19th century threat of scientific and technological advancement. What do you think the nature of your vampires reveal about our society today as compared to prior incarnations i.e Dracula? Embarassingly, enthusiastic over your work in The Passage series by the way.
