The initial idea came from research I was doing on WW-2 Germany. I became curious about what happened to Germany after the war. The more I looked into it, the more I thought about a family friend of ours while I was growing up. I knew she had been born in East Germany and that her family got out in a very dangerous escape when she was very young, but before the wall was built. (This is Ilona, to whom the book is dedicated.) From there, I started thinking about other families who didn't get out before the Berlin Wall went up.
