David asked Manny Rayner:

Thanks, Manny. By the way, what would you say are the main differences between chess and go? I have heard that chess is more logical and go more intuitive, is it true? Is calculation more important in chess than in go?

Manny Rayner People often say that chess is about logic and calculation while Go is about pattern recognition and intuition, but I'm not sure I agree. If you read any serious book on Go, you'll see that Go players are extremely good at calculation, and it's obviously a central part of the game. An English-language book I particularly recommend in this context is Iwamoto's The 1971 Honinbo Tournament .
