Goodreads asked Jacob Devlin:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jacob Devlin Graduate school! The Carver is the product of two ingredients:

1) My Masters thesis on the Peter Pan Syndrome (the pop psychology term for a 30-something-year-old dude who still acts like he's 12) in Italian literature, which kept bringing me back to Pinocchio. Peter Pan AND Pinocchio in the same thesis? Cool!

2) The story of Michelangelo, who came in possession of a big slab of marble, told his friends that he saw a man trapped inside, and a few years later he had "freed" the Statue of David.

So I wondered, what if Pinocchio was a 30-something-year-old dude who loved to carve stuff just like his father, and he lived next door to a 30-something-year-old Peter Pan? And what if they both had sons? Thus, Chapter One of The Carver was born :)
