Rachel asked Christine Feehan:

Hi Christine! Longtime reader: you got me hooked on romance in high school and I smuggled your books to class and read them on the sly because I couldn't put them down! Now I smuggle them to work... I just wanted to get your input on some of the recent heroes being almost cruel. ): All the men fight inner demons and are protective (yum!) but a few have toed the abusive line. Realism due to dark pasts/childhoods?

Christine Feehan Glad to know I'm not the only one who smuggled books to school. lol
It's not just that some of the men have had dark pasts, though there's that, but some of them have had no experience with love. How can you show something you aren't experience with until you experience it? So they start off teetering on the edge so they can have a learning curve that allows the character to grow. I want to show that love conquers all and the harder the hero's life is the more important love can be to changing their lives for the better.
