Goodreads asked Rae Meadows:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Rae Meadows I didn't know a lot about the Dust Bowl when I began but I became totally fascinated by it, how it was largely a man-made environmental disaster, and that people stayed year after year through the incessant dust storms. I was inspired by the photographs taken for the Farm Securities Administration (FSA) in the 1930s, particularly those by Dorothea Lange. I spent countless hours going through the Library of Congress archives. The faces of the women were haunting and spoke of such determination.
