Beverly McCall
Beverly McCall asked Kristen Heitzmann:

What process to you use to develop your characters?

Kristen Heitzmann I use absolutely no process at all. They appear on the page and start saying and doing things. I get to know them, just like you, by how other characters see them, by thoughts they have and things they reveal as the story progresses. It is wholly organic, springing fresh from the moment in the story, and I'm often blindsided by their backstory etc. Once I know something, I'll go back and thread that in like texture and highlights in a painting before moving the story onward. Too much planning can trap an author in what and how she decided her character would be. I can't imagine limiting mine. It's way too much fun to discover them.
